In the simplest terms, Survivors Together is a social group based in East London, for female survivors of sexual abuse.
A lot has happened since our launch some seven years ago. What started as a coffee shop meet up with just a handful of people is now a regular collaboration with over 70 members. We received charitable status in 2009 and are on our second Big Lottery grant. We are also supported by The Hospital Saturday Fund and London Catalyst. We are full members of The Survivors Trust.
Yvonne (our Director) meets people individually before welcoming them to the group. She has an enormous understanding of the issues involved and what resources are available but the main purpose of Survivors Together is to provide a relaxed environment where women survivors can socialise and try new activities with people who understand.
We meet twice a month and our activities include crafts, poetry, self defence, well-being and a range of guest speakers. This summer, we organised a full day of activities, a day out and a mini-break. At christmas, we usually celebrate with a meal together. We are starting another group for young women (16-25).
We may be small, but the impact we have on our survivors is immeasurable. What gives us hope is seeing women - often fractured by their experiences - start the journey to becoming whole again.
